Dog itching: Causes
What is dog itching? This is the constant scratching of the skin because of certain factors like allergies, dryness of the skin, insects like fleas and mites which cause ringworms and other infections. Itching occurs mainly behind the ears, and on the belly. The most common cause of itching in dogs is allergies. Allergies occur when the dogs’ body reacts to certain factors like food and the environment. Food allergies occur when the dog eats certain types of food and it starts to itch because of the reaction that the food causes. Food like chicken, beef and corn are the most common causes of allergies in dogs. Allergies are also caused by environmental factors like pollen and some fabrics in that when they come into contact with the dogs’ skin it leads to itching. Allergies can be controlled by boosting the dogs’ immunity system.
Dog itching can also be caused by insect infestation. Insects like mites and fleas make the dog to scratch itself on the belly and behind the ears all the time making it restless, and sometimes the scratching removes the fur completely leaving patches on the dogs’ skin. Anxiety and stress can also lead to itching in dogs. Anxiety that is brought about by separation from the rest of the dogs may lead to itching. Another cause of dog itching is dry skin. Dry skin makes the dog to become uncomfortable and to itch all the time and you can prevent this problem by bathing the dog regularly with dog shampoo to keep its skin moist and hydrated. Itching in dogs is also brought about by fungus that causes ringworms. This fungus lives on the outer layer of the skin of the dog which leads to ringworms that make the dogs itch all the time. Another cause of itching in dogs can be caused by yeast infections which attack the dogs’ skin which leads to itching.
